Utility Meter Relocation: The Task Nobody Warns You About

Moving gas and electric meters for an extension involves five companies and takes months to coordinate. A real-world guide to getting it right.

If your extension covers your existing meter position, or your new build footprint sits over the supply pipes running from the road, those meters need to move. This sounds like a phone call and a morning's work. It isn't. On one documented build, the process from first contact to final payment took fourteen months. A gas leak was discovered during trench digging. An energy supplier was unreachable by phone while an engineer waited on site. And a builder who promised to dig the utility trenches never did, forcing the homeowner to find a groundworker for over three thousand pounds.

Utility meter relocation is the most coordination-heavy task in any extension project. It involves five separate parties who don't communicate with each other, and you're the one who has to make them all show up in the right order.

Why Meters Need to Move

The most common trigger is simple: the external wall your meter box is fixed to stops being an external wall. A rear or side extension swallows the old outside wall into the new internal space, and gas and electricity meters have to stay accessible on an external wall so the network can read, inspect, and maintain them. A meter boxed inside your new kitchen isn't allowed. So the meter, and usually the supply run feeding it, has to move to a new outside wall.

Two related triggers can force the issue too. If the extension footprint sits over the existing meter position, or over the supply pipes running in from the road, they have to move regardless: it's illegal to permanently build over a gas supply pipe, and the networks won't have their apparatus buried under your structure where they can't reach it. And even where the meter itself isn't in the way, your groundworker will be digging foundation trenches and drainage runs through the same ground as the underground services, so knowing exactly where those run before anyone picks up a shovel is not optional.

Your architect should flag all of this on the drawings.

Run an LSBUD search before any digging starts. It's free for domestic users and takes minutes. One caveat is worth understanding, though: LSBUD only returns assets belonging to the 160+ networks registered with it, and it maps their distribution mains, not the individual service connection running from the main into your house. On an older property, or one set back down a private road or cul-de-sac, your own gas, electric, and water service lines often won't show up at all, and a local pipe whose owner isn't an LSBUD member won't either. So treat a clear LSBUD result as "no registered mains here," not "nothing to hit." Also ask your gas and electricity network operators for their own service records for your address, and hand-dig trial holes to locate anything that might run through the dig. Where LSBUD or those records show utilities within 2 metres of your planned excavation, hand-dig only in that area. No mechanical diggers near live services.

The Five Parties (and Why It's a Nightmare)

This is where meter relocation differs from every other task on an extension project. You're not dealing with one company. You're coordinating five, and each one has its own process, its own timescale, its own booking system, and its own definition of "on time."

The gas distribution network (Cadent, SGN, Northern Gas Networks, or Wales and West Utilities depending on your region) owns the gas pipe from the road to your meter. They are the only party legally permitted to disconnect, reroute, and reconnect the gas supply pipe. You cannot choose a different provider. They have a monopoly.

The electricity distribution network operator (National Grid Electricity Distribution, UK Power Networks, Northern Powergrid, SSEN, or SP Energy Networks) owns the electric cable from the road to your meter. Same monopoly situation. If the service cable needs rerouting, only the DNO can do it.

Your energy supplier (British Gas, OVO, Octopus, EDF, whoever you pay your bills to) owns the meter itself, and moves it through the meter operator (a Meter Asset Manager) it engages. Only your current supplier can arrange that. The gas network moves the pipe and charges you for it. The supplier's meter operator moves the meter that sits on the end of the pipe, and the network's charge does not cover that work. Two separate companies, two separate appointments, ideally on the same day. Lining them up is down to you.

Your electrician connects the new electricity meter to your consumer unit (fuseboard). If the meter moves far enough, the consumer unit has to move too. More on that shortly.

A groundworker digs the trenches for the new gas and electric routes. The utility companies won't dig them for you. Someone has to excavate to their specification before they arrive on site. Your builder may promise to handle this. Get that promise in writing with a deadline, because builders routinely fail to follow through on it.
