Excavation and Muck Away: The Dig and Removing the Spoil

How much spoil an extension dig really generates, why bulking catches people out, what muck away costs by the grab load, and the duty-of-care paperwork that legally follows your waste off site.

Before any concrete goes in the ground, the ground has to come out. That hole has to go somewhere, and "muck away" (carting the spoil off site and paying to tip it) is a real cost line that homeowners routinely forget to budget for. They cost the concrete, the steel, the kitchen. They forget that several tonnes of clay has to be lifted, trucked, and tipped first, and that the bill for emptying the hole can rival the bill for filling it.

The dig itself is quick. A competent groundworker opens the trenches for a single-storey extension in a day or two. The surprise is never the digging. It's the volume of muck that comes out, and what it costs to make it disappear.

Do this first

The dig is the first physical event after the footprint is marked. Before the bucket goes in, your footprint must be set out and checked, because the trench is cut straight to those lines, and you must have located underground services with an LSBUD search and a CAT scan so the digger doesn't strike a live main. After this, the open trench is inspected and the foundations are poured; the drainage runs are often dug in the same visit.

The Dig Is Two Operations, Not One

Most homeowners picture excavation as one job: dig the hole. On site it's two distinct operations, often on the same day, and knowing the difference helps you understand both what's happening and how much spoil each one generates.

The first is the reduced-level dig, or topsoil strip. The groundworker scrapes the organic topsoil off the whole footprint and reduces it to a clean, level subsoil platform. Topsoil is the dark, root-filled top layer, typically the top 150-300. It's full of organic matter, it rots, it compresses, and you cannot build on it. So it always comes off, every job, no exceptions. Building control will reject foundations if organic material is left under the formation level, because the structure will settle as it decays. The level platform this creates is what the floor build-up eventually sits on.

The second is trench excavation: the deep, narrow dig that follows your set-out lines down to the depth your structural engineer specified. For a typical extension that's a metre or more deep and around 600mm wide for trench fill. This is the dig that defines your foundations. What happens to the trench after it's open (the inspection, the pour, the curing) belongs to the foundations and footings stage. The dig being open, clean, and down to depth is what this stage delivers; what fills the trench comes next.

Both operations produce spoil, and they produce different kinds. The topsoil strip yields organic topsoil, which has its own value and disposal route. The trench yields subsoil, usually clay. Keep that distinction in mind, because it drives both the volume calculation and the disposal cost.

How Much Spoil You Actually Generate

Here's the number that catches people out. Soil does not stay the same size when you dig it up. Compacted in the ground for centuries, then loosened by a digger bucket, it swells. The same earth occupies more space loose in the lorry than it did in the trench. That swelling is the bulking factor, and ignoring it is why so many homeowners book one grab lorry and need two.

For ordinary subsoil the bulking factor is 20-30%, with clay sitting at the top of that range and sandy soils at the bottom. So a cubic metre dug out of the ground becomes roughly 1.2 to 1.3 cubic metres of loose muck to cart away. Topsoil bulks even more because of its loose, organic structure.

Work it through for a standard 20m² single-storey rear extension and the surprise becomes obvious. Strip the footprint at a topsoil depth of 150-300 and you've already loosened around 4 cubic metres before you touch the trench. Then dig roughly 14 linear metres of foundation trench at 600mm wide and a metre deep, which is another 8 or 9 cubic metres. That's roughly 12 to 13 cubic metres of soil dug out of the ground, before any bulking.

Bulking changes the volume, not the weight. Those 12 to 13 cubic metres swell by a quarter or more once loose, so you've got roughly 16 cubic metres of muck to haul, and that loose volume is what fills the grab. The weight is fixed in the ground: clay subsoil runs around 1.8 tonnes per cubic metre, so the same 12 to 13 cubic metres weigh about 22 tonnes whether they sit packed in the trench or loose on the lorry. Allow for the lighter topsoil layer and how deep you strip, and a routine 20m² extension dig lands at 20-28 tonnes. An 8-wheel grab lorry carries 16 to 18 tonnes, so that's one full load and usually the start of a second.

The bulking factor in practice: the same soil that fits neatly in the trench grows by around 25% once dug out, turning one expected grab load into nearly two.

The spoil a typical 20m² extension dig produces. People budget for one grab lorry, then find the dig fills nearly two. Deeper trenches, made ground, or a larger footprint scale this up fast: a 55m² extension can reach 60-80 tonnes.

The bulking factor also explains a quirk of timing. Winter soil is wetter and heavier, so each lorry carries fewer cubic metres before it hits its weight limit, and you pay for more loads.

Tip

If your dig date is flexible, schedule the excavation for a dry spell rather than the depths of winter. Saturated clay is heavier and bulks more, which means more loads and a higher muck-away bill. Forum reports of summer digs coming in a quarter to a third cheaper than the same job in January are common. It won't always be possible to wait, but if you can, you save real money.
