Moving gas, electric, or water meters for an extension usually costs £500 – £2,000 per meter for a short move along an external wall, and around £3,500 – £5,000 once you add trenching and a consumer unit move to a gas and electric job. This estimator turns your specific choices, which utilities move, how far, and whether groundwork is involved, into a realistic range you can budget against.

The bigger risk with utility meter relocation is not the cost. It is the time. The supply pipes and cables are moved by regional monopolies and the meters by your energy supplier, never by your builder, and they all run to their own calendars. Allow 10-14 weeks from first contact to the meter being moved, and start the process the day planning permission lands.

Why five companies get involved

A meter move is rarely one phone call. Your gas network operator owns the gas supply pipe and is the only party allowed to move it. Your distribution network operator owns the electricity cable from the street to the meter. Separately, your energy supplier is the only one who can physically move the meter itself. Add a Gas Safe engineer to reconnect internal pipework and a groundworker to dig the utility trench, and you are coordinating up to five parties for one job.

Two constraints catch people out. Network operators will not work while scaffolding is up, so the scaffolding constraint forces the meter box into the wall during blockwork, before the scaffold goes on. And quotes come with a fixed acceptance window, so the quote validity window means a slipping build can force a fresh survey and a fresh charge.

What drives the number up

Distance is the first lever. The base figures assume a short move; every metre beyond that adds a per-metre charge from the network operator, and gas, electric, and water each carry a different rate. Trenching is the second. If the supply pipes have to be rerouted underground to new positions, the groundwork alone can run into the low thousands, and whoever digs it must be agreed in writing before the move date rather than assumed.

The third is the three-metre tail rule. When the electricity meter moves far enough, the consumer unit has to follow it, which brings a registered electrician onto the job at £500 – £800.

A worked example

Take a rear extension where both the gas and electric meters sit inside the new footprint and have to move roughly six metres to a new external wall. Both network operators charge for the move, the extra distance adds a per-metre uplift on each, a groundworker digs the trench for the rerouted supplies, and the meter shift breaches the three-metre rule so the fuse box relocates too at £500 – £800.

Add those lines together and a gas-plus-electric job of this shape lands around £3,500 – £5,000, which is the range the calculator returns above once you enter your own distance and options.
