Zero-ClearanceConcept

Also: zero-clearance insert, zero-clearance principle, zero-clearance base

The woodworking principle that closing the gap between a blade and its surrounding baseplate or table slot to zero prevents fibres at the cut edge from flexing into the gap and fracturing. Achieved on a jigsaw by a sacrificial anti-splinter insert that is solid on first fit — the blade cuts its own kerf slot, producing a slot exactly the blade's width. Also applies to router, table saw, and bandsaw inserts.
